When we made them, we had a malfunction with our pressure canner. When this happens, we typically put the jars in the fridge for preservation and eat them as quickly as we can. We thought we were just salvaging our efforts but it also turned into a taste test for dad and he was immediately hooked. He ate a whole pint by himself! We initially made them as a test but decided they were so good, they will be a staple in our canning rotation. These canned refried beans are great for kids and adults alike!Ingredients for Canned Refried Beans1/2 onion, chopped small 3 cups dry pinto beans 2 Tbsp minced garlic 3 Tbsp tomato sauce 2 tsp salt 2 tsp black pepper 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp chili powderDirectionsRinse your beans. Soak them for 8-12 hours. Drain them and add 1 1/4 cups of beans to each sterilized pint. Add around 1 Tbsp onion to each pint. In a separate bowl, mix all of the seasonings and tomato sauce together. Add 1- 1/2 tsp of the sauce mixture to each pint. Fill the jars the rest of the way with water, leaving an inch of headspace. Process at 10lbs pressure for 80 minutes. 95 minutes if you are doing quarts. (Adjust to your altitude if needed as well). Allow the canner to cool naturally. Recipe makes 4 pints. When you are ready to use them reheat the beans and blend with an immersion blender. Any type of blender would work but I particularly love immersion blenders for things like this.In Summary: Canned Refried BeansI think the best part of these canned refried beans is that they are so cost friendly! We triple the recipe to make 12 pints at a time. The cost of the beans is currently around $11 from Azure, and we’ll give a $1 for the onion even though those are usually cheap too. So around $1 per pint and I can currently get one can of organic refried beans for around $4 at Azure. A grand savings of $36. Which I’m sure doesn’t seem like a lot but when the cost of groceries is insane- that’s definitely adds up quick with all of the other canning we do. I did a pretty big cost breakdown for how much canning has saved us on this post but I’ll try to do an updated one for 2024 because the costs have not gone down!
