3 Month Food Supply
The world has been pretty crazy for about two years now. I think we can all agree on that! Plus, now there are escalating tensions in other countries that have us all on edge. There have been illnesses and crazy weather events. You name it, we’ve seen it happening. There are a lot of people that have been “prepping” for years. For years, I thought they were crazy. Then over the past two years we saw the supply chain break down quickly and I realized it was not crazy. Sure, I started buying in bulk awhile ago but I decided to take it a step further. In the following charts I’m giving you everything you need to have a 3 month food supply.
Why 3 Months?
Honestly, you don’t need to do 3 months. There is also enough information here for you to only do 1 month. 3 months feels more safe to me because once the train goes off the tracks it can take some time to get it on the tracks again. For instance, if supply chain crashes for some reason I fully believe it will be over a month before you will see your stores fully stocked again. Should some sort of military escalation occur I believe it will take more than one month to be resolved.
In addition to that, the costs just keep going up. The inflation, from my understanding, shows no signs of slowing down. If you are able to stock up now it may save you a lot of money in the future. I know that seems counterintuitive because you’ll have to spend a lot of money up front but in the long run it makes sense.
Packaged Vs. From Scratch
In full transparency it was easier to make these lists with packaged foods (like cinnamon rolls and croissants). If you want to cook them from scratch I will be doing another post soon on what baking supplies, spices, etc that I recommend keeping on hand. Should you choose to cook them from scratch you can just cross them off the list and adjust as needed. The good part about these lists is that you can still print them and adjust them as you need.
MAKE SURE YOU READ THESE FOR UNDERSTANDING
Before I start I want to give you some notes:
- My original list is for 2 people (my husband and I). I scaled it to a family of 4-5 to make it more realistic for the rest of the world.
- My estimates are HIGH. I want to make sure I note that because there are areas you could scale down if you want. In all honesty I feel confident we could go 3-4 months with this list of food just using some stretching techniques I’ve learned in the pantry challenge.
- I tried to use only freezer and shelf stable items. Trust me, I want a salad sometimes too. However, 3 months of lettuce will not survive. Things like cream cheese, shredded cheese, and butter can all be frozen to help make sure you have them when you need them.
- This plans for the WORST CASE SCENARIO! That means that I am planning on both my husband and myself being home all day everyday. We will need breakfast, lunch, and dinner at home. The scaled up versions of this list also plan on that.
- Just because you have these on hand and planned does not mean you have to eat these meals. I have a feeling that would get very redundant. Now, i don’t mind redundant but I know you guys do! The point is to have the supplies on hand and making sure you will eat those supplies. If these are all meals you will eat, great! If not, you can adjust where you need and don’t feel like you need to set in stone that this is what you will eat every day for 3 months. Switch up breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The goal here is to make sure you have it on hand when needed.
Breakfast
Breakfast is fairly repetitive. I don’t have a ton of breakfast ideas and I’m not keeping boxes of cereal on hand. If you want to keep cereal on hand, more power to you! We are opting for oatmeal and eggs (because we have chickens). Without further ado, let’s get into it!

In Summary: 3 Month Food Supply
This was one of the hardest and best exercises that I’ve ever done! It was really cool to see how much we had in some areas but didn’t in others. I also really liked that it helped give me an idea of how much we would need to can to last us an entire year. That’s always been a goal for us and now I feel like we are getting closer to being able to do it. I’m building my next cart with Azure to help get us where we need to be.
